Corkcicle Whiskey Wedge review
A novelty that turns out to be built on real physics - and a gift whose one serious limitation is the thing nobody mentions until it is unwrapped.

This is the glass people send each other links to. It looks like a gimmick - a tumbler with a lump of ice stuck to one side of it - and the reflex on this site is to assume that something designed to be photographed is not designed to be drunk from. That reflex is wrong here, and it is worth setting out why before getting to what is actually disappointing about it.
What it is, mechanically
The product is two objects: a 9 oz glass tumbler and a reusable silicone mold shaped to sit in it. You fill the glass with water, clip the mold over the rim, and freeze it. The listing describes the mold as floating on the water as it freezes, which is the part that makes the shape work - it settles into position rather than being clamped, so the ice forms as a single diagonal mass against one wall of the glass. Lift the mold out and you have a wedge of ice already in the vessel you are about to drink from.
So you never transfer the ice, and the ice is shaped to the glass rather than to a tray. That is the whole idea, and it is a better one than it looks.
The physics is real, and it is the same argument as a big cube
Cooling and melting both scale with surface area, and they pull against each other. Whisky Advocate's comparison found that smaller ice chills fastest, because crushed ice has enormous surface area - and that the same surface area is why a glass of crushed ice turns into a glass of water so quickly. One large piece reverses both: slower to take the temperature down, far slower to disappear into the drink.
A wedge is one large piece. It is the same reason a two-inch cube from an ice mold is the best-value upgrade on this site, and the same reason whiskey stones do not work - stones have a lower heat capacity than ice and no phase change at all, so they neither chill properly nor slow anything down. The wedge is on the right side of that argument.
Three things the listings do not tell you
None of these are reasons not to buy it. They are the things people find out in week one, and they are the difference between a good gift and a slightly awkward one.
- One glass makes one wedge, and only in that glass. The mold is not a tray - it produces ice *in* the tumbler. Two people drinking means two glasses and two molds, both frozen hours in advance. There is no way to make four of these at seven in the evening.
- The pour is smaller than 9 oz suggests. The wedge occupies a real share of the glass, which is the point, but it means the usable volume for whiskey is modest. If the recipient pours generously they will find it tight.
- The ice meets your lip. The flat angled face rises to the rim on one side, so as the glass empties you are drinking past the ice rather than around it. Most people stop noticing. A few find it genuinely annoying and no listing anywhere mentions it.
The genuinely good news: it is dishwasher safe
The Corkcicle listing states dishwasher safe outright. That sounds minor and is not. Across this site's whole glassware registry, most listings publish no care instruction at all, and the design-led glasses are the worst offenders - the Norlan publishes nothing and has a double wall you should not put water inside, the LIITON publishes nothing and has a sculpted interior, and every solid wooden cup is hand-wash only in capital letters.
A novelty glass that cannot go in the machine ends up on a shelf. This one can, which is a large part of why it survives past January. Dishwasher-safe whiskey glasses goes through that distinction across the whole category.
How we judged it
We have not used this glass. The assessment above is built from what the listing publishes, from the physics already sourced across this site's ice and stones pages, and from comparing the specification against the alternatives in the registry. Our full method is on how we pick. What follows is the comparison that decides it.
| Whiskey Wedge | Sphere mold + rocks glass | Whiskey stones | |
|---|---|---|---|
| One large piece of ice | Yes | Yes | No - no ice at all |
| Chills properly | Yes | Yes | No - low heat capacity, no phase change |
| Servings per freeze | One, per glass owned | Four to six from one tray | Reusable, but ineffective |
| Glass included | Yes | No | Usually, in gift sets |
| Can be made on demand | No - hours ahead | No - hours ahead | Yes, from the freezer |
| Dishwasher safe | Stated on the listing | Varies by glass | Not applicable |
| Best for | One person, one drink, as a gift | A household that drinks whiskey regularly | Nobody, honestly |

Top pick - A gift that gets opened and then actually used
Corkcicle Whiskey Wedge 9 oz Glass with Silicone Ice Mold
A 9 oz rocks glass with a silicone mold that freezes one angled wedge of ice inside the glass itself - genuinely slower-melting than cubes, and dishwasher safe, which almost nothing in this category is.
The idea is better than it sounds. The mold clips to the rim and floats as the water freezes, so the ice sets as a single diagonal mass against one side of the glass rather than as several small cubes. One large piece has far less surface area than the same volume in cubes, which is the same physics that makes a two-inch cube worth buying - except here the glass and the mold arrive together for about the price of a mold alone. It is also the rare novelty gift that survives a normal kitchen: the listing states dishwasher safe.

Pick 2 - The wedge format when presentation matters more than the brand
Brisked Whiskey Wedge Glass Set with Gift Box
The same mechanism from a copyist, in a gift box the original does not come with - about the same money and more giftable straight out of the carton.
There is no moat on freezing ice in a shaped mold, and this is an honest version of the idea: insert the mold, fill with water, freeze, lift it out. The gift box is the reason to choose it, because the Corkcicle arrives in plain retail packaging and a wedge glass is overwhelmingly bought as a present.

Pick 3 - The same idea in a heavier glass
Corkcicle Premium Old Fashioned Glass 9 oz with Silicone Ice Mold
Corkcicle's newer and dearer take on its own wedge: the same built-in silicone mold in a weightier old fashioned glass.
If the objection to the original is that the glass feels light for the money, this is the answer from the maker rather than from a copyist. Mechanically it is identical - fill the mold, freeze at least four hours, lift the mold out, pour over the wedge - so everything true of the original is true here, in a glass that presents better unwrapped.

Pick 4 - The honest answer to whiskey stones
Tovolo Craft Ice Sphere Molds, Set of 2
Two large sphere molds from an established kitchenware brand - the cheapest thing on this site that genuinely makes whiskey colder.
This is the product we send people to at the end of our whiskey stones verdict. A large ice sphere has a low surface-area-to-volume ratio, so it chills hard and melts slowly, which is the combination stones are marketed as delivering and physically cannot.

Pick 5 - Everyday rocks glasses
GLASKEY Rocks Glasses, Set of 4, 11 oz
Four 11 oz lead-free crystal old fashioneds - the workhorse shape, with the lead-free claim actually stated on the listing.
Most whiskey in most houses is drunk from a rocks glass, not a nosing glass, and 11 oz is the size that takes a large ice cube without the drink vanishing under it. Lead-free is published rather than implied, which we count in a category where most listings say crystal and stop.

The two versions from Corkcicle, and the copy
Corkcicle now sells the same mechanism in two glasses. The original 9 oz Whiskey Wedge is the one to buy. The Premium Old Fashioned is heavier and costs more, and the only functional difference we can find in the listings runs the wrong way: the premium version publishes no care instruction at all, where the original states dishwasher safe. Paying more to lose a published specification is a strange trade.
The Brisked set is the copy, at about the same price, and it is an honest one - the mechanism is not proprietary and the instructions are the same. It ships in a gift box, which the Corkcicle does not, and that is a real advantage for something bought almost exclusively as a present. Against it: the listing publishes no capacity, no material and no care guidance, which on a glass headed for a freezer is three blanks too many.
Who should buy it
- A gift for one whiskey drinker: the Corkcicle Whiskey Wedge. It is the version with the published care instruction and the name people recognized.
- A gift that needs to look like one on the table: the Brisked set, for the box - accepting that the listing tells you almost nothing about the glass.
- A heavier glass from the same maker: the Premium Old Fashioned, if the weight matters more to you than the dishwasher line does.
- A household where more than one person drinks whiskey: not a wedge at all. A sphere mold makes several at once for a fraction of the price, and you choose the glass separately.
- You want the everyday glass rather than the clever one: a plain set of rocks glasses. Best rocks glasses has the capacity rule that decides whether large ice works in them.
The verdict
It is a novelty built on a correct idea, which makes it unusual in this category. The ice is genuinely better than cubes, the glass and the mold arrive together for roughly what a decent mold costs on its own, and it can go in the dishwasher. Buy it for one person who drinks one whiskey in an evening and would never buy themselves a nice glass.
Do not buy it as barware. One wedge per glass per freeze is a hard constraint, and the moment there are guests it becomes the wrong object entirely.
Common questions
Is the Corkcicle Whiskey Wedge worth it?
Yes, as a gift for one person. The single angled piece of ice has much less surface area than cubes, so it chills properly and melts slowly, and the glass and reusable mold come together for about the price of a good ice mold alone. It is poor value if more than one person in the house drinks whiskey, because each glass makes one wedge per freeze.
How does the Whiskey Wedge work?
You fill the 9 oz glass with water and clip the silicone mold over the rim. The mold floats as the water freezes, so the ice sets as a single diagonal wedge against one side of the glass. Freeze it for several hours, lift the mold out, and pour the whiskey over the ice already sitting in the glass.
Is the Whiskey Wedge dishwasher safe?
The Corkcicle listing for the original 9 oz Whiskey Wedge states dishwasher safe. The Premium Old Fashioned version from the same maker publishes no care instruction, and neither does the Brisked copy - so for those two, hand washing is the safe assumption.
How long does the Whiskey Wedge take to freeze?
Corkcicle's listing for the Premium Old Fashioned states four hours or more, and that is a reasonable guide for the original too. In practice it means deciding in the afternoon that you want one in the evening, which is the product's main limitation.
Does the Whiskey Wedge really reduce dilution?
Compared with cubes, yes - less surface area means slower melting, which is the same reason a large sphere or cube is worth buying. What it does not establish is that less water makes the whiskey better; that is a matter of taste, and a few drops of water genuinely improves some whiskeys.
What is better than a Whiskey Wedge?
For a household rather than an individual, a sphere or large-cube mold. It makes several pieces at once instead of one, costs less, and lets you choose the glass separately. The wedge wins on being a complete gift in one box and on arriving already in a glass.
