A rocks glass is a short, straight-sided, heavy-based tumbler. You will see it sold as a lowball glass, an old fashioned glass, a double old fashioned and a whiskey tumbler, and for buying purposes those are the same object at different capacities. This is the glass most whiskey in the world is actually drunk from, which makes it the safest glassware gift there is.
It is also the shape the glassware hub recommends when you cannot ask the recipient how they drink. A nosing glass is the better tool for tasting and a worse one for everything else. A rocks glass handles neat pours, ice, water and cocktails without complaint.
How we judged these
Stating the criteria before the ranking, because a roundup that does not is just a list of things somebody liked.
- Published capacity. The single most useful number on the listing and the one that decides fit for purpose. A listing that will not state it goes to the bottom.
- Whether a two-inch cube leaves room for a drink. This is capacity applied. Below about 11 oz the answer is no.
- Base weight and stability. A heavy base is more stable with a large cube in it and survives households better.
- Published care instructions. Almost nothing in this category commits to dishwasher safety. The few that do are worth more than the ones that stay quiet.
- Cost per glass at the quantity sold. A set of twelve and a set of two are not competing for the same job, so we rank within intent rather than on headline price.
- A stated lead-free specification where the listing calls the glass crystal. It matters less here than on a decanter, but a maker that publishes it is a maker that publishes things.
The capacity rule
This is the whole page in one paragraph. A two-inch sphere or cube - the large-format ice that has become standard for whiskey - displaces a great deal of a small glass. In an 8 oz tumbler it fits and then leaves room for roughly a mouthful. In an 11 oz glass it works. In a 12 oz glass it is comfortable, and there is space for a splash of water on top.
So the buying rule is: find out whether they use big ice. If they do, or if you are giving an ice mold alongside the glasses, buy 11 oz or more. If they drink neat or use whatever the freezer makes, 8 to 10 oz is not a compromise at all and costs less.
Sets of twelve are not a mistake
Two of the picks below are twelve-glass restaurant packs, and they look out of place in a gift guide until you consider what they are for. Glasses break. A household that owns twelve of one plain, replaceable, dishwasher-safe glass never thinks about glassware again, and the cost per glass is lower than any decorative set.
They are a poor present and an excellent purchase. If you are stocking a home bar rather than wrapping something, buy the dozen. If it has to be a gift, buy four in a box.
What the heavy base is actually for
A weighted base lowers the center of gravity, which matters more than it sounds once there is a heavy cube of ice rolling around inside the glass.
