Almost everything this site covers is decoration sold as function. The Norlan is the rarer thing: an object with a real design argument behind it, made by people who can explain what each part is for. That makes it worth a proper page - and it makes the honest verdict more complicated than either the enthusiasts or the skeptics allow.

The Norlan is a double-walled glass, hand-blown from borosilicate - the same family of glass used for laboratory and heatproof kitchenware. The outer wall is shaped like a rocks glass. The inner wall is shaped like a nosing glass, tapering inward with a set of protrusions around the base. The listing describes the design as patented, as award-winning, and as refined with the master distiller Jim McEwan.

So the pitch is that you get the aroma-concentrating behavior of a tasting glass in an object that reads, on a shelf or in a photograph, as a normal tumbler. That is a genuinely clever thing to attempt and as far as we can tell nothing else in the category attempts it.

The inner taper does what a taper does: it collects the aromatic compounds rising off the whiskey and narrows the column that reaches your nose. That part is the same well-understood mechanism that makes a Glencairn work, and there is no reason to doubt it operates here.

The listing also claims the inner protrusions reduce ethanol burn. We are not in a position to confirm that. It is a plausible-sounding mechanism - more surface area, faster evaporation of the harshest volatiles - but we have not tested this glass, we have seen no independent measurement of the effect, and the claim originates with the manufacturer. We are repeating it here as the maker's claim and marking it as unverified rather than passing it on as a finding. That is the standard our method commits us to, and this is exactly the situation it exists for.

It is expensive for what it does acoustically. A single Norlan costs roughly what a set of four Glencairns costs. If your only interest is concentrating aroma, the Glencairn does that better, because it does not have to compromise the taper to fit inside a tumbler silhouette.

It is fragile. Hand-blown borosilicate at this thinness is the most breakable thing we have listed anywhere on this site. The double wall also means a crack in either surface ends the glass.

It is hand wash only in practice. No dishwasher guidance is published on the listing we read, and the cavity between the walls is not somewhere you want water sitting. Assume washing and drying by hand, forever.

Worth flagging because it surprises people: the inner chamber is considerably smaller than the outer glass suggests. A normal measure of whiskey sits low in it. That is correct for a tasting glass and it looks stingy if you were expecting a tumbler's pour, which is a slightly awkward thing to discover with a guest.

• The person who would use a nosing glass but finds them ugly. This is the core case and the Norlan is the only answer to it.
• The gift where the object has to look like something. It photographs beautifully and it is unmistakably designed, which a Glencairn is not.

• Not the first whiskey glass someone owns. Start with a single Glencairn at a fraction of the price and find out whether the recipient reaches for it.
