Of all the recipients in the gifts-by-recipient hub, this is the one where getting it wrong is most visible. A bourbon drinker who receives a smoker kit will probably try it. A single malt drinker who receives one will thank you politely and never open it, because the entire premise runs against how they drink.
That is not snobbery on their part, or ours. It follows from what the drink is: a spirit whose appeal is aromatic complexity, drunk at room temperature to keep those aromatics available. Most whiskey accessories are designed to make whiskey colder, sweeter or smokier, and all three work against that.
What actually suits single malt
Nosing glassware, first and by a distance. The tapered glass is the only accessory on this site that makes a single malt more of what it already is. It collects the aromatic compounds coming off the spirit and concentrates them, and since almost all of what you perceive as flavor arrives through the nose, that is the whole game. How we judged these
- Does it support drinking neat? The organizing question. Anything premised on dilution or chilling was excluded.
- Does it respect the whiskey as released? Smoking, infusing and aging all overwrite it.
