The three constraints
Multiples. Anything good at eighty dollars becomes a serious expense at five. This is why engraved single glasses dominate the list below and why decanter sets appear only at the top end, where they are a gift for the best man rather than the whole party.
A deadline that does not move. Personalization is made to order. Between production and shipping, three weeks is a comfortable margin and one week is a gamble. This is the single most common failure in this category and it is entirely avoidable.
Uneven closeness. A monogrammed glass is warm without being presumptuous, which is exactly the right register for a group where you are genuinely close to some people and cordially fond of others.
How we judged these
- Cost at five. Not the headline price. Everything here was assessed at the quantity a wedding party actually requires.
- Does it survive personalization? Engraving suits heavy, plain surfaces. It does badly on thin crystal and on anything already patterned.
- Will it be used after the wedding? A rocks glass will. A novelty with a date on it goes in a drawer.
- Does it present well without wrapping? Groomsmen gifts are usually handed over in a room, not posted.
- Published lead time and personalization detail - character limits, placement, whether a preview is offered.
- Does it work for a non-drinker? Not everyone in the party drinks whiskey. A glass is neutral enough; a flask is less so.
What to buy, by budget per person
