Cool whiskey gifts

Cool is a real search and a genuinely useful category, but it is also where this whole niche is at its worst. Search it and you get bullet-shaped glasses, gun-shaped decanters and tumblers with slogans on them - all of which get one laugh and then thirty years in a cupboard.

So this page uses one test, and it is a harsher one than usual: is it still being used in March? Everything below passes it, and the reasoning for each is stated rather than asserted.

It does something

The gifts with staying power are activities rather than objects. A smoker kit produces an evening; an oak kit produces a result three weeks later; a clear-ice mold produces something people photograph every time. None of them is a joke, so none of them wears out.

This is also the answer to the hardest brief in the category - buying for someone who already owns everything. An activity cannot be a duplicate, which is why gifts for the collector leans on the same principle.

The trick is real, not decorative

There is a difference between a decanter shaped like a globe and a decanter shaped like a gun. The globe is an unusual form doing a normal job well - it holds a full bottle and looks deliberate on a shelf. The gun is a punchline in glass, and punchlines have a half-life.
