Best wood chips for a cocktail smoker
The kit came with six tiny bags and no explanation. This is which wood does what, and which refill is worth buying when those run out.

| 1 | ![]() G & J's Finest Oak Wood Chips for Cocktail Smoker, 5 oz with SpoonTop pickKiln-dried oak sawdust in a 5 oz bag with a dosing spoon - the one wood that belongs on a whiskey rather than next to it, and the cheapest way to own a useful amount of it. | Whiskey, if you only ever buy one wood | It is a single flavor, so there is nothing to experiment with and nothing to open in front of anyone - this is a refill, not a present. The listing describes the cut as sawdust shavings, which lights fast and burns out fast; a coarser chip smolders longer if you are smoking under a cloche rather than a lid. | |
| 2 | ![]() G & J's Finest Cherry Wood Chips for Cocktail Smoker, 5 oz with SpoonThe sweet end of the category at the same price and size as the oak - the wood to reach for when there is sugar and bitters in the glass rather than whiskey on its own. | An old fashioned, and for anyone who finds oak heavy | On a good neat whiskey it is the wrong choice and reads as sweet on sweet. The extra-fine sawdust cut lights almost instantly, which is forgiving with a torch and unforgiving if you overfill the lid - a heaped spoon goes bitter. | |
| 3 | ![]() Foghat Cocktail Smoker Cocktail Smoker Wood Chips, Bourbon Barrel Oak and Ash, 4 ozShavings of seasoned bourbon-barrel oak blended with ash - the only wood here whose provenance is the thing you are buying, and the cut is better than most. | Bourbon drinkers who want the barrel note | Four ounces is the worst value per ounce on this page, and the listing does not publish how much of the blend is barrel oak and how much is plain ash - so the premium buys a ratio you cannot see. Barrel provenance is also unverifiable by anyone outside the supply chain, including us. | |
| 4 | ![]() Smoky Crafts Cocktail Smoker Wood Chips, 5-Flavor Variety Pack, 2 oz EachApple, cherry, hickory, mesquite and walnut in five screw-cap tins - the variety pack that fixes the problem every variety pack has, which is what the chips are stored in. | A gift, and for finding out which wood they like | It is the most expensive thing on this page by a wide margin, and four of the five woods are barbecue woods borrowed for drinks - mesquite in particular is aggressive enough to bury a delicate dram. The 500-plus-uses figure is the seller's own arithmetic, not a measurement. | |
| 5 | ![]() homia Cocktail Smoker Kit Wood Chips, 5 JarsApple, cherry, hickory, pecan and oak in five sealed jars - the middle option, with one number on the listing you should not rely on. | A variety pack in jars rather than bags | The listing states two different quantities: the title says 8.4 oz per jar and a bullet says 4 oz per jar. We have recorded no published capacity at all because the listing does not agree with itself, and at this price that is a real purchasing risk. The seller also recommends its own smoker, which is marketing rather than a compatibility limit. | |
| 6 | ![]() INSISART Natural Wood Chips for Cocktail Smoker, 12 FlavorsTwelve jars for under twenty dollars, nine of them wood and three of them not - good value, and a labelling habit worth understanding before you buy. | The widest spread for the money | Three of the twelve - rosemary, cinnamon and orange - are botanicals, not wood, and the listing counts them in the headline number. That is how a twelve-flavor set is really a nine-wood set. They also behave differently under a torch: a dried herb scorches rather than smolders and turns acrid quickly. Twelve small jars is a lot of jars for one drawer. | |
| 7 | ![]() Middleton Mixology SmokeTop 4 Pack of Cocktail Smoker Wood ChipsFour woods including oak and cherry, made in the USA and cut for the smoker they are sold alongside - the safe refill if the kit under the tree was a SmokeTop. | Anyone who already owns a SmokeTop | The listing contradicts itself about what is in the box: the title says cherry, hickory, maple and oak, and one of the bullets says alder, apple and cinnamon. We have recorded the title's set because it is the more prominent claim, but it means you cannot be sure what arrives. It is also a lot of money for four small bags. |
Every cocktail smoker ships with a handful of small bags and no guidance at all beyond the names on them. The result is predictable: people work through the apple, decide smoking is a gimmick, and the kit goes in a drawer. The wood is doing more of the work than the smoker is, and the wood that comes in the box is usually chosen to make the box look generous rather than to suit whiskey.
This page is about the refill rather than the device. If you have not bought the device yet, whiskey smoker kits ranks those and carries the warning that matters most - torch kits do not include butane and cannot ship with it - and how to use a smoker kit covers the technique.
What smoke actually adds
Smoke is not one flavor, it is a set of compounds released when wood smolders rather than burns. The most direct evidence of what those are comes from a 2025 paper in *Molecules* by Vazquez, Tello and Peterson, who ran gas chromatography with mass spectrometry and olfactometry on condensed hardwood smoke and identified 27 odorants.
The potent ones are worth knowing by name, because they are the vocabulary sellers borrow without explaining. Guaiacol reads as clove and vanilla. 4-methylguaiacol is toasted, vanilla, slightly ashy. 4-methylsyringol goes burnt and clove-like. 3-ethylphenol is plain ashy, and 2,3-butanedione is the buttery note. That spread is why a well-judged smoke tastes warm and sweet rather than like a bonfire, and why an overdone one goes straight to ashtray.
Why oak is the whiskey answer
There is one wood on this page with a non-arbitrary claim to belong in a whiskey glass. Bourbon's federal standard of identity, 27 CFR 5.143, requires that it be stored in charred new oak containers - the oak is not a stylistic choice, it is part of the legal definition of the spirit. The vanilla and caramel notes people describe in bourbon come substantially from that contact.
Smoking the finished drink over oak therefore does something different from smoking it over apple. It leans on a note the whiskey already has rather than introducing an unrelated one. That is also why oak is the most forgiving wood to overdo slightly: the direction it pushes in is one the drink was already going.
It is the opposite case from an old fashioned. There the glass already holds sugar, bitters and an orange twist, and a fruit smoke sits with those comfortably where oak can read as heavy on heavy. That split - oak for the spirit, cherry for the cocktail - is most of what anyone needs from this category.
| Wood | How it is described | Best on |
|---|---|---|
| Oak | Vanilla, smoke and spice; robust | Bourbon and rye neat or over ice - the default |
| Bourbon barrel oak | Oak with barrel residue, blended with ash | Bourbon, when you want the provenance |
| Cherry | Sweet and fruity, a hint of almond and spice | A smoked old fashioned, and lighter whiskeys |
| Apple | Light and sweet | Delicate drinks; easy to lose entirely |
| Hickory | Strong and bacon-like | Big, sweet bourbons; overpowers most things |
| Mesquite | The most aggressive of the group | Rarely the right call in a glass |
| Pecan, maple, beech, walnut | Mild, between apple and hickory | Experimenting, once you know the two above |
How we judged these
We have not smoked a drink with any of them. What we did is read every listing against four criteria, in this order, and three of the four are things sellers would rather you did not compare.
- Does it include oak? A set without oak is not a whiskey set, whatever the front of the box says. Two of the seven below are single-wood oak.
- How much wood, and for what price? Per-ounce cost varies by a factor of six across this page, and it moves in the opposite direction to flavor count.
- What is the cut? Fine sawdust lights instantly and flashes off; chips and shavings smolder longer. Neither is better, but a torch and a cloche want different things, and most listings bury this.
- What is it stored in? Screw-cap tins and sealed jars keep chips usable; zip bags and pull-off lids do not. This is the most under-rated specification in the category.

Top pick - Whiskey, if you only ever buy one wood
G & J's Finest Oak Wood Chips for Cocktail Smoker, 5 oz with Spoon
Kiln-dried oak sawdust in a 5 oz bag with a dosing spoon - the one wood that belongs on a whiskey rather than next to it, and the cheapest way to own a useful amount of it.
Nearly every variety pack sold for cocktail smokers leads with apple and cherry, which are barbecue woods borrowed for drinks. Oak is the wood whiskey was already made in, so smoking a bourbon over it compounds a flavor the spirit already carries instead of laying an unrelated fruit note on top. Buying it alone costs less than a five-flavor set and gets you several times as much of the only one you will reach for.

Pick 2 - An old fashioned, and for anyone who finds oak heavy
G & J's Finest Cherry Wood Chips for Cocktail Smoker, 5 oz with Spoon
The sweet end of the category at the same price and size as the oak - the wood to reach for when there is sugar and bitters in the glass rather than whiskey on its own.
Cherry is the wood most bars reach for on a smoked old fashioned, and the reason is structural rather than fashionable: the drink already carries sugar and citrus oil, so a fruit smoke sits alongside them instead of arguing with them. Same 5 oz bag and dosing spoon as the oak, which makes buying one of each the obvious move and still cheaper than most variety packs.

Pick 3 - Bourbon drinkers who want the barrel note
Foghat Cocktail Smoker Cocktail Smoker Wood Chips, Bourbon Barrel Oak and Ash, 4 oz
Shavings of seasoned bourbon-barrel oak blended with ash - the only wood here whose provenance is the thing you are buying, and the cut is better than most.
Spent bourbon barrels are a real by-product with a real residue, and a smoke made from staves that held whiskey lands closer to the drink than orchard wood does. The listing states the blend is rolled leaf plus finely shaved chunks, which is a more useful cut than pure dust: the chunks keep smoldering after the dust has flashed off. It also states the chips carry no pre-soaked flavor extracts, which is worth looking for and rarely stated outright.

Pick 4 - A gift, and for finding out which wood they like
Smoky Crafts Cocktail Smoker Wood Chips, 5-Flavor Variety Pack, 2 oz Each
Apple, cherry, hickory, mesquite and walnut in five screw-cap tins - the variety pack that fixes the problem every variety pack has, which is what the chips are stored in.
The failure mode of a flavor set is not the wood, it is the packaging: pull-off lids and zip bags let chips dry out and spill through a drawer. This set ships screw-cap tins and the listing calls that out specifically, and 2 oz per flavor is enough to form an opinion rather than to try something once. As a present it is also legible on the table in a way a refill bag is not.

Pick 5 - A variety pack in jars rather than bags
homia Cocktail Smoker Kit Wood Chips, 5 Jars
Apple, cherry, hickory, pecan and oak in five sealed jars - the middle option, with one number on the listing you should not rely on.
Five woods with oak and pecan in the mix covers the useful range without the botanical padding, and jars solve the staleness problem that bags do not. It sits between the single-wood bags and the thirty-dollar tin sets at a price that makes it a reasonable first purchase for someone who does not yet know what they like.

Pick 6 - The widest spread for the money
INSISART Natural Wood Chips for Cocktail Smoker, 12 Flavors
Twelve jars for under twenty dollars, nine of them wood and three of them not - good value, and a labelling habit worth understanding before you buy.
Nine woods including oak, pecan, beech and pear is a genuinely wide spread, and at this price the cost per flavor is the lowest on the page. If the recipient is the kind of person who will line up four glasses and run a side-by-side, this is the set that lets them do it.

Pick 7 - Anyone who already owns a SmokeTop
Middleton Mixology SmokeTop 4 Pack of Cocktail Smoker Wood Chips
Four woods including oak and cherry, made in the USA and cut for the smoker they are sold alongside - the safe refill if the kit under the tree was a SmokeTop.
Chip cut matters more than people expect. Too fine and it flashes off before the lid seats; too coarse and a torch struggles to get it going at all. These are tuned for one specific smoker, which takes that variable out. The four-wood spread is the sensible one for whiskey - oak and maple at the spirit-forward end, cherry and hickory for an old fashioned - rather than a dozen flavors chosen to make the box look generous.

What to look for
- Oak in the mix, or a single-wood oak bag. Everything else is optional.
- A stated weight. Three of the seven here publish no usable quantity, and one publishes two different ones in the same listing. On a consumable, weight is the price.
- Screw caps or sealed jars. Chips that dry out light unevenly and taste thin. The tins are the reason the most expensive set here is still defensible.
- No pre-soaked flavor extracts. One listing states explicitly that it uses none, which is worth having in writing - the alternative is a wood that tastes of an additive rather than of wood.
- Ignore the uses-per-pack figure. Every one of them is the seller's arithmetic on their own assumed dose, and doses vary by a factor of three between a lid and a cloche.
How much to use
Less than the bag implies. A level spoon in the lid is the normal dose and a heaped one is where bitterness starts - the compounds that go ashy and acrid are the same ones that make it pleasant at a lower concentration. If the drink tastes of ashtray, the fix is almost always less wood and a shorter contact time rather than a different wood.
Light it, let it smolder rather than flame, cap the glass, and give it thirty to sixty seconds before you lift the lid. How to use a smoker kit walks through the whole sequence, including the butane problem.
Which one to buy
- You drink whiskey neat or over ice: the G and J's Finest oak. One wood, the right wood, 5 oz and a spoon for under ten dollars.
- You make old fashioneds: the G and J's Finest cherry, at the same price and size. Buying both still costs less than most variety packs.
- You want the barrel story: the Foghat bourbon barrel oak and ash. Worst value per ounce here, and the only one whose provenance is the point.
- It is a gift: the Smoky Crafts five-tin set. Screw-cap tins, 2 oz per flavor, and it looks like a present rather than a refill - which the single-wood bags frankly do not.
- You want a spread without the padding: the homia five-jar set, with the caveat that its listing contradicts itself on jar size.
- You want the most flavors for the money: the INSISART twelve-jar set, understanding that it is nine woods and three botanicals.
- You own a SmokeTop: the SmokeTop four-pack, cut for that smoker - though its own listing disagrees with itself about which four woods are inside.

| How do I actually use it? | How to use a smoker kit |
| Which wood, and which refill? | This page |
| What about putting wood *in* the whiskey? | Infusion kits and aging barrels |
| What should I never add to whiskey? | What not to mix |
The last row is the distinction worth holding on to. Smoking puts an aroma on the surface of a finished drink and takes under a minute. An infusion kit or an aging barrel puts wood in contact with the spirit for days or weeks and changes the liquid itself. They use similar-looking bags of wood for completely different jobs, and chips sold for a smoker are cut far too fine to use for infusion.
Common questions
What wood chips are best for whiskey?
Oak, for a reason that is not a matter of taste: bourbon's federal standard of identity requires storage in charred new oak, so oak smoke reinforces a flavor the whiskey already carries rather than adding an unrelated one. Cherry is the better choice for a smoked old fashioned, where the sugar and citrus already in the glass sit comfortably with a fruit smoke.
Can you use barbecue wood chips in a cocktail smoker?
Only if the cut is right. Chips sold for a barbecue are usually far coarser than a cocktail smoker lid can light with a torch, and they are often pre-soaked. The woods themselves are the same species, so the limitation is physical rather than chemical.
How much wood should you put in a cocktail smoker?
A level spoon, not a heaped one. The compounds that make smoke pleasant at low concentration are the same ones that read as ashtray at high concentration, so if a drink tastes acrid the fix is less wood and a shorter contact time, not a different wood.
Do cocktail smoker wood chips go bad?
They do not spoil, but they dry out and lose aromatic oils, after which they light unevenly and taste thin. That is why storage matters more than most buyers expect - screw-cap tins and sealed jars keep chips usable far longer than zip bags or pull-off lids.
Is a twelve-flavor wood chip set better value?
Usually not. Per ounce it tends to be worse than a single-wood bag, and the headline count can be padded - one set here reaches twelve by including rosemary, cinnamon and orange, which are botanicals rather than wood and scorch rather than smolder under a torch.
Are wood chips for a smoker the same as the wood in an infusion kit?
No. Smoking chips are cut fine so they light quickly and put aroma on the surface of a finished drink in under a minute. Infusion wood is coarser and sits in the spirit for days or weeks to change the liquid itself. See infusion kits for that job.
