Can you ship whiskey as a gift?
The answer is no, and almost every page that tells you otherwise is selling you something. Here is what the carriers actually say, and what to send instead.
We have not tested these products and we do not pretend to have. Here is what we did instead. Links to Amazon earn us a commission at no extra cost to you, and commission never decides what is on this page - disclosure.

| # | Gift | Best for | The catch | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | ![]() Glencairn Whisky Glass, Set of 4Top pickThe industry-standard nosing glass, four of them, in a gift carton. If you only remember one recommendation from this site, make it this one. | The gift a whiskey person will actually use | It is a tasting glass, not a rocks glass. There is no room for a large ice cube and it looks wrong holding a cocktail, so it is a second set rather than an only set for someone who drinks their whiskey long. | |
| 2 | ![]() Rocks Glasses and Stones Set with Wooden Gift BoxThe standard glasses-plus-stones format in a wooden box, at the price point office gift exchanges are actually capped at. | A Secret Santa with a real ceiling | Half the contents is whiskey stones, which is the item we rate lowest on the whole site. If the recipient drinks their whiskey over ice, that half of the box is a downgrade on what they already do - buy the ice-mold set above instead. | |
| 3 | ![]() Cocktail Smoker Kit with Torch, 6 Wood Chip FlavorsThe kit that made this category popular: a torch, a smoking lid and six wood chips, with the butane honestly excluded on the listing rather than buried. | The standard smoker kit | Butane is not included and cannot be shipped with it. If you give this on Christmas morning without a can of butane in the box, it does not work that day - buy the fuel separately and wrap it too. | |
| 4 | ![]() Tovolo Craft Ice Sphere Molds, Set of 2Two large sphere molds from an established kitchenware brand - the cheapest thing on this site that genuinely makes whiskey colder. | The honest answer to whiskey stones | It is ice, so it does dilute - slowly, but it does. If the person you are buying for genuinely objects to any water in their whiskey, this is not the fix, and neither is anything else. | |
| 5 | ![]() Corkcicle Whiskey Wedge 9 oz Glass with Silicone Ice MoldA 9 oz rocks glass with a silicone mold that freezes one angled wedge of ice inside the glass itself - genuinely slower-melting than cubes, and dishwasher safe, which almost nothing in this category is. | A gift that gets opened and then actually used | You get one glass and one wedge per freeze, so two people drinking means buying two and planning hours ahead - this cannot be produced on demand for guests. The wedge takes up a real share of a 9 oz glass, so the pour is small. And the angled face means the ice sits against your lip as the glass empties, which some people dislike and no listing warns you about. | |
| 6 | ![]() Riedel Tumbler Spey Whisky, Set of 2A machine-made, dishwasher-safe cut tumbler at the bottom of Riedel's whisky range - the pair to buy if you want to find out whether the brand is worth it to you. | The easiest way into the brand | It is a tumbler, not a nosing glass - the wide mouth that makes it comfortable also lets aroma escape, so it will never concentrate a nose the way a Glencairn does. The cut decoration is a matter of taste and it is machine-made, so do not expect hand-blown character at this rung. |
This question usually arrives in December, from someone holding a bottle and a shipping label. The short answer is the one nobody wants, so it is worth being exact about where it comes from rather than asserting it: the rule is published, it is specific, and all three major US carriers say the same thing in slightly different language.
USPS: nonmailable, with no gift exception
The Postal Service publishes its mailability rules in Publication 52. Section 424, headed Nonmailable Intoxicating Liquors, is one sentence long and leaves no room: intoxicating liquors and taxable liquors, *including those obtained under a prescription or as a collector's item*, are nonmailable.
Read the exceptions it does make and you can see how narrow the rule is. Section 422.21 permits products that merely contain alcohol - cooking wine, cold remedies, mouthwash - provided they are not classified as a taxable alcoholic beverage. Section 422.22 exempts shipments between federal or state agency employees for official use, such as laboratory testing. That is the complete list. There is no exception for a gift, for a single bottle, for a bottle you are sending to yourself, or for something rare enough to be a collector's item - the last of those is named explicitly as still being prohibited.
UPS and FedEx: licensed shippers only
The private carriers do move alcohol, which is why people assume a consumer can hand them a bottle. They do not accept it from consumers. FedEx puts it in one sentence on its own alcohol page: *Consumers may not ship alcohol of any type via FedEx services.* Only FedEx-approved, licensed alcohol shippers who have entered into a FedEx Alcohol Shipping Agreement may ship it at all, and every US alcohol delivery requires an Adult Signature Required service at the door.
UPS says the same thing and shouts part of it. Wine is accepted only from shippers licensed under applicable law who have signed either the UPS Agreement for Approved Wine Shippers or a Wine Industry Fulfillment House Agreement, and its guidance states in capitals that UPS does not accept shipments of wine from shippers who have not entered into one of these agreements. Beer and spirits run on the same contract basis, limited to selected states.
So the gap people try to walk through is not a gap. A private person handing a carrier an undeclared bottle is not using a gray area, they are misdescribing the contents of a package - which is how it is treated when it is found.
| Carrier | Can a private individual ship whiskey? | What it allows instead |
|---|---|---|
| USPS | No - nonmailable under Publication 52 section 424 | Products containing alcohol that are not taxable beverages; official agency shipments |
| UPS | No - approved-shipper agreement required | Licensed shippers under contract, to selected states, with adult signature |
| FedEx | No - consumers may not ship alcohol of any type | FedEx-approved licensed shippers who have signed an alcohol agreement, with Adult Signature Required |
The two things you can legally do
First, buy from a licensed retailer that ships to the recipient's state and have them send it. The license, the agreement with the carrier and the adult-signature service are all theirs, and the delivery is legitimate. The catch is that state law decides whether it can arrive at all, direct-to-consumer spirits rules are considerably tighter than wine rules, and the recipient has to be home and over 21 to sign.
Second - and this is the route this whole site exists for - send the part of the gift that is not alcohol. A whiskey drinker already buys whiskey. What they do not buy for themselves is the glass they would never spend forty dollars on, the ice mold that makes a Tuesday drink feel considered, or the smoker kit that turns a drink into something to do. None of it needs a license, an agreement, or a signature at the door.
How we chose the gifts below
We have not handled any of these. What we did was apply four filters to the registry, in this order, so the list answers the question the page asks rather than being a general gift list bolted onto a legal explainer.
- Contains no alcohol, so none of the rules above apply to it. That rules out the bitters-and-syrup cocktail kits, which are a good gift and a different page.
- Survives a courier. Glass that ships in a fitted carton or a molded box, not bare stemware.
- Reads as a present on arrival, because a mailed gift is unwrapped without you in the room. A gift carton is doing real work here.
- Suits a whiskey drinker you may not know well - which is usually the situation when you are posting rather than handing it over.

Top pick - The gift a whiskey person will actually use
Glencairn Whisky Glass, Set of 4
The industry-standard nosing glass, four of them, in a gift carton. If you only remember one recommendation from this site, make it this one.
The Glencairn is the shape distilleries themselves use for tasting: a wide bowl that holds the aroma and a tapered mouth that concentrates it. It is the rare whiskey gift that changes the drink rather than decorating it, and a set of four is the number that works for sharing a bottle with friends.

Pick 2 - A Secret Santa with a real ceiling
Rocks Glasses and Stones Set with Wooden Gift Box
The standard glasses-plus-stones format in a wooden box, at the price point office gift exchanges are actually capped at.
Gift exchanges have a hard budget and a soft requirement that the present not look like it hit the budget exactly. A hinged wooden box does that work - it reads as considered on the table in a way a card sleeve does not, and the format is inoffensive enough to hand to a colleague whose taste you do not know.

Pick 3 - The standard smoker kit
Cocktail Smoker Kit with Torch, 6 Wood Chip Flavors
The kit that made this category popular: a torch, a smoking lid and six wood chips, with the butane honestly excluded on the listing rather than buried.
A smoker kit is the rare whiskey gift that is an activity rather than an object, which makes it a good present for someone who already owns everything. Six chip varieties is enough to find a favorite without becoming a project.

Pick 4 - The honest answer to whiskey stones
Tovolo Craft Ice Sphere Molds, Set of 2
Two large sphere molds from an established kitchenware brand - the cheapest thing on this site that genuinely makes whiskey colder.
This is the product we send people to at the end of our whiskey stones verdict. A large ice sphere has a low surface-area-to-volume ratio, so it chills hard and melts slowly, which is the combination stones are marketed as delivering and physically cannot.

Pick 5 - A gift that gets opened and then actually used
Corkcicle Whiskey Wedge 9 oz Glass with Silicone Ice Mold
A 9 oz rocks glass with a silicone mold that freezes one angled wedge of ice inside the glass itself - genuinely slower-melting than cubes, and dishwasher safe, which almost nothing in this category is.
The idea is better than it sounds. The mold clips to the rim and floats as the water freezes, so the ice sets as a single diagonal mass against one side of the glass rather than as several small cubes. One large piece has far less surface area than the same volume in cubes, which is the same physics that makes a two-inch cube worth buying - except here the glass and the mold arrive together for about the price of a mold alone. It is also the rare novelty gift that survives a normal kitchen: the listing states dishwasher safe.

Pick 6 - The easiest way into the brand
Riedel Tumbler Spey Whisky, Set of 2
A machine-made, dishwasher-safe cut tumbler at the bottom of Riedel's whisky range - the pair to buy if you want to find out whether the brand is worth it to you.
Riedel is the name people search for when they want a serious whisky glass, and this is the least painful place to start: two glasses, a decorated tumbler with a large surface area, and a shape that takes ice and a full pour without ceremony. The Spey name comes from the Scottish river, which is marketing, but the glass underneath it is a properly made piece of barware.

Which one to send
- You know nothing about their taste: the Glencairn set of four. It is the closest thing to a universal answer in whiskey, it ships in its own gift carton, and the listing states dishwasher safe - so it survives the recipient as well as the courier.
- It needs to look like a present with no wrapping: the glasses-and-stones wooden box set. The hinged box does the presentation work that a padded envelope destroys.
- You want a reaction rather than an object: a smoker kit. Buy the electric one if you will not be there, because torch kits do not include butane and cannot ship with it - smoker kits covers that trap in full.
- Small, cheap and genuinely used: a sphere mold. It is the best value on the site and it improves a drink more than most things costing five times as much.
- A single gift for one person: the Corkcicle Whiskey Wedge - a glass and its ice mold in one object, reviewed in full here.
- Budget is not the constraint: the Riedel Spey tumblers. Dishwasher safe at a tier where that is rare, and the name is recognized by people who care about glassware.
What about the delivery apps and the gifting sites?
Same-day alcohol delivery services and retailer gifting sites are not loopholes - they are the first legal route above, operating properly. The seller holds the license, the courier is working under an agreement or a local delivery permit, and somebody over 21 signs. That is a real option and we are not warning you off it. It is simply not the same thing as you putting a bottle in a box, and it only works where the destination state allows it.
What to be wary of is any service that invites *you* to send *your* bottle. USPS treats even the advertising for that as nonmailable, which tells you what it thinks of the underlying act.

Common questions
Can you ship whiskey as a gift in the US?
Not as a private individual. USPS Publication 52 section 424 makes intoxicating liquor nonmailable with no gift exception, and FedEx states that consumers may not ship alcohol of any type. UPS and FedEx carry alcohol only for licensed businesses that have signed an alcohol shipping agreement. The legal route is to buy from a licensed retailer that ships to the recipient's state.
Can you mail alcohol through USPS if you declare it?
No. Declaring it does not create an exception - it simply means the package is identified as nonmailable. Publication 52 section 424 prohibits intoxicating and taxable liquors outright, and names prescription liquor and collector's items as still prohibited.
What happens if you ship whiskey without saying so?
You are misdescribing the contents of a package to a carrier. Carriers return or hold packages identified with compliance problems and charge the shipper a fee, and the package is not insured for a loss it was never accepted to carry. We are not going to tell you the odds of being caught, because the question people are really asking is whether it is allowed, and it is not.
Can I take whiskey on a plane instead?
Yes, within limits, and that is a different rule set. The TSA allows alcoholic beverages under 70 percent alcohol by volume in checked baggage in unopened retail packaging, up to five liters per passenger. Our travel kits page covers it along with the gear for carrying it safely.
What is the best whiskey gift you can actually put in the post?
A set of Glencairn glasses. It is the glass most whiskey drinkers either own or want, it ships in its own gift carton so it needs no wrapping, and the listing states it is dishwasher safe. If you want presentation instead of a brand name, a glasses-and-stones set in a hinged wooden box does more visible work on the table.
Can a liquor store ship a bottle for me?
A licensed retailer can ship to states that permit direct-to-consumer spirits shipments, using a carrier agreement and an adult-signature service. That is the legitimate version of what you are trying to do. Whether it is possible depends entirely on the destination state, and spirits rules are tighter than wine rules in most of them.
