What is a decanter?

The word comes from decanting, which simply means pouring a liquid from one container into another while leaving something behind. In wine that something is sediment. In whiskey there is nothing to leave behind, which is the first clue about what a whiskey decanter is really for.

A decanter is typically glass or crystal, holds somewhere between 750 ml and a liter and a half, has a wide base for stability and a narrower neck, and comes with a stopper - usually ground glass, fitted individually to that piece. The heavy base is not only aesthetic: it lowers the center of gravity of a tall vessel full of liquid.

Two real things. Air contact softens the tannins in a young red and lets closed aromas open up, which is why a wine can taste noticeably different after an hour in a decanter. And in an older bottle, sediment settles out over years - pouring carefully into a decanter leaves it behind in the bottle rather than in your glass.

Neither of those. Whiskey is distilled, so it has no sediment. It is bottled at forty percent alcohol or above and has already spent years in a barrel, so an hour of air contact does nothing you could detect.

• Straight-sided or square. The classic spirits decanter. Wide base, straight walls, glass stopper. The safest choice for a gift.
• Cut crystal. Deep-cut patterns that catch light. Traditional, harder to clean, and the type where the lead question matters most.

• Wine decanters. Wide-bellied, often stopperless, shaped for maximum air contact. The wrong shape for spirits.
